In January 2024, a group of Solidarity Couriers had a unique experience in Sri Lanka. The trip combined the thrill of discovery with a concrete commitment to solidarity, providing tangible aid to those in need and leaving a lasting impression on all participants. It was not only an opportunity to explore an extraordinary island, but also a unique chance to truly make a difference. In collaboration with our partner Travel in Progress, we created a truly evocative and engaging experience that combined the beauty of Sri Lanka with the overwhelming power of solidarity.
Our group (Claudio Di Girolamo, Alessandra Pagliaro, Tiziana Di Genova, Roberta Mainquà, Gianluca Marconi, Alessandro Berdozzi, Chiara Bolognesi, Beatrice Ligabue, Cristina Trapletti), accompanied by TakeMeBack founder Antonio Di Leonardo, retraced the steps of the film Serendip, exploring breathtaking landscapes and places rich in history and culture.
One of the highlights of the trip was the school in Ambewela, an institution that welcomes over 200 children from families who face poverty and the hardships of rural life on a daily basis. For these children, the school represents one of the few opportunities for hope, growth, and a future. But it is not easy. Resources are limited, and outside help is essential.
The Power of Solidarity
We have embarked on a charitable mission with an ambitious goal: to build a new classroom so these children can study in a larger, safer, and more welcoming space. In addition, we raised funds to ensure that every child has the school supplies needed to start the new school year with the right tools.
And so, thanks to everyone’s generosity and dedication, the fundraiser was an extraordinary success. Every contribution received was used efficiently, with no hidden costs, directly on the ground to purchase what the children needed: backpacks, notebooks, pencils, shoes, and clothing. Everything was purchased locally, thereby supporting the country’s economy and keeping costs to a minimum. Every single donation had a tangible and immediate impact. The children of Ambewela, who often didn’t even have a decent pair of shoes to wear, can now go to school with new backpacks and notebooks, ready to learn, grow, and dream. The new “Carlotta Classroom” that we built together is a space of hope and opportunity, where children can focus on what truly matters: their future.
This trip has forged a deep bond with a community that lives far away from us, but which has taught us so much. It has taught us the power of solidarity and the impact of small gestures, which together become an unstoppable force.
